What Is Astigmatism?

Astigmatism is a common vision condition that can cause several visual disturbances. It is found in many people, though the state doesn't cause any problems in most people and requires no correction. Astigmatism occurs when the eyes are shaped abnormally. While round eyes are essential to clear vision, the eyes of those with astigmatism aren't round and have an oblong football shape. This form dramatically affects how a patent can see. They often need corrective lenses to see correctly. Patients with astigmatism need a specific type of contact lens and generally can't wear soft contacts. It's also common for people with this condition to wear eyeglasses. Developing Astigmatism

Most people with astigmatism were born with it. However, there are also ways you can develop this condition later in life. Some eye surgeries can cause it by changing the shape of the eyeball. Several eye injuries can do the same thing. Some eye diseases can also have this effect. When the amount of astigmatism ranges from moderate to severe, the patient must choose a vision correction method.

Shape of Your Eye

How you see is dependent on the specific shape of your eyeballs. If the eyeball is round, light enters the eye and gets bent in various directions for clear vision. Granted, when the eyeball is shaped more like a football, the light that enters the eye gets bent unevenly in different directions. This shape causes blurry vision and often causes visual distortions. As a result, you may see objects where only one portion is clear, and the rest is blurry or distorted.

Astigmatism Symptoms

Several vision conditions can make items look blurry, so some assume they are nearsighted or farsighted. What's different with astigmatism is that there are also other visual distortions. It can also cause night vision problems. You may get frustrated by your vision issues and need help choosing a vision correction method.
