Routine Eye Exams

What is a Routine Eye Exam?

At our practice, we offer routine eye exams to learn more about your eye health and to determine if you need vision correction. Our optometrists recommend receiving a regular eye exam every two years if you have clear vision. If you wear glasses, contacts, or have been diagnosed with any vision problems, it is recommended you get your eyes examined annually.

What Can I Expect During a Routine Eye Exam?

During an eye exam, our optometrists will perform multiple exams to determine if you need vision correction or an update for your current prescription. Our eye doctors will often test how sensitive your eyes are to color and your peripheral vision. After that, we will check if your pupils respond correctly to light. Then, our doctors will examine your physical eye and check for any abnormalities or damages on the lens, cornea, or pupil. The final portion is the acuity test, which is the most well-known part of the exam. You'll stand a certain distance away from a chart with shapes, letters or numbers, and be asked to identify them.

Our optometrists may ask if you would like to have your eyes dilated once the other portions of the exam are completed. The dilation allows us to accurately and fully examine your eye. Your eyes will be sensitive afterward, so it's important to avoid bright light, especially sunlight, for a couple of hours.

What Happens After a Routine Eye Exam?

If our optometrists determine your vision is satisfactory and your eyes are healthy, there are usually no further steps for you to take until the next time you visit us for an eye exam. However, if we recommend a new prescription or change to an existing prescription, you may be scheduled for a follow-up exam. This follow-up provides our optometrists more time to determine the specific eye health problems that may be happening and decide the necessary treatment.
